Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Release Should Shatter Records

Could today's release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 overshadow Breaking Dawn: Part 2?

Not in terms of Internet fan-demnonium, as the two are targeted toward different subsets of the population, to say the least. But financially, it just might.

COD-Black Ops 2

The gaming industry has seen a considerable boost this month thanks to last week's Halo 4 release, and COD: Black Ops II will likely generate huge dollars.

Halo 4 reportedly made more than $220 million in its first 24 hours of sales, and will likely eclipse $300 million in its first week. That's Robsten territory!

Amazingly, the first Call of Duty: Black Ops game passed that benchmark going away, earning $650 million worldwide in just five days in 2010.

The buzz surrounding Black Ops 2 - and the people camped out all night to buy it - would indicate that $650 million in a week is plausible again, if not likely.

For comparison's sake, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 made $290 million in one weekend last year, but "only" $705 million to date.

That figure is on par with the rest of the franchise, so it's unlikely Breaking Dawn Part 2 will blow by it, though it is the final chapter, so you never know.

If Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart start making out at all the red carpet press events, then $1 billion could be within reach. Short of that, doubtful.
