Edward Archbold Wins Roach-Eating Contest, Dies Soon After
Oct 9th 2012, 14:25

At least Edward Archbold went out a winner.

The 32-year old West Palm Beach resident came out on top of a cockroach-eating contest in Deefield Beach on Friday night, earning a python for his nauseating efforts - but then passing away shortly afterward.

According to a Broward Sheriff's Office statement, Archbold collapsed not long after winning the competition. He was transported to a local hospital and subsequently pronounced dead by physicians.

His cause of death is unknown at this time, but Michael Adams - professor of entomology at the University of California at Riverside - tells The Associated Press that roaches on their own should not cause such a fatal result.

"Some people do have allergies to roaches," Adams said. "But there are no toxins in roaches or related insects."

No other contestant fell ill after the contest, and an attorney for the owner of the store at which the competition was held says the bugs were chosen from an inventory "that are safely and domestically raised in a controlled environment as food for reptiles."
