George McGovern Dies; 1972 Democratic Nominee for President Dead at 90 Oct 21st 2012, 14:00 (GettyImages.com) George McGovern, the Democratic candidate for President in 1972, has died. He was 90. McGovern had been in hospice care in recent days with what his family termed a “combination of medical conditions.” An outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War and advocate for progressive causes, McGovern served South Dakota as a Senator for 18 years following a four-year stint in the House of Representatives. He was trounced in the 1972 presidential election by incumbent Richard Nixon, whose involvement in the Watergate scandal that began with that campaign eventually unravelled his presidency. In a statement, McGovern’s family said, “We are blessed to know that our father lived a long, successful and productive life advocating for the hungry, being a progressive voice for millions and fighting for peace.
