Roitfeld, the former editor of Paris Vogue , decided to give the debut issue the theme of 'Rebirth', inspired by her daughter Julia's pregnancy and the subsequent birth of her first grandchild, a little girl named Romy Nicole. "When I started to work on this issue … I was obsessed with pregnancy, with babies, with new life coming. It's become an obsession," she said. She's appeared demurely dressed in the likes of US Vogue whilst also playing the archetypal pin-up girl on the cover of men's magazines like GQ and appearing in nothing but a wet T-shirt for photographer Terry Richardson. "Maybe people will be surprised that she was my first cover, but you know, I always like to surprise people," Roitfeld told The Daily Beast about her choice of cover star. "I wanted someone with a sensual body, someone who could be a mother for all these babies. Honestly, from the first time I worked with her – I saw in Sports Illustrated some pictures she did with Terry Richardson. I would not say she's a controversial model, but she's not a classic model, and I like that." Kate is a fashion girl. The blonde graces the cover of Carine Roitfeld's widely anticipated glossy, CR Fashion Book, which hits newsstands September 13. Given Carine's celeb status, the new mag has been gaining buzz among fashionistas for months… now it's finally here and Kate Upton is the star. The black and white cover pic, snapped by Bruce Weber, combines Kate's multiple model identities into one lovely shot — it's sexy and just a tad cleavage-y yet she's clad in a demure sweater holding baby chickens. (A second cover features Audrey Harrelson holding an infant.) Say what you will about Upton, but to our mind picking Kate makes perfect sense: the theme of the issue is Rebirth, with the pages full of baby animals, a very pregnant Julia Restoin-Roitfeld and models Marte Mei van Haaster and Marie Piovesan holding an infant and pushing a pram. Perhaps Kate Upton is due for a rebirth of sorts, the chance to brand herself once and for all as a sophisticated model to be taken seriously by the fashion establishment. An endorsement from Carine Roitfeld, the former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief, would certainly get the job done.
